How to degrease and lube your bike chain

    Bruce Gilbert of Bike Medicine refused to say no to Royal Purple asking to bottle their NASA grade lubricant for cyclists. Designed for use in the hard rock mining industry and subsequently used in offshore drilling applications, Purple extreme is the world's most advanced bike chain lubricant with a Timken pressure rating of over 90 (some leading cycle brand oils and greases were tested by Royal Purple and found to have readings of sub 16, most reading sub 10). Timken pressure ratings measure 'film strength' - this is simply the ability of a lubricant to keep metal apart from metal. With the further ability to work in coarse mining and underwater environments, Purple Extreme is an excellent solution for bicycles. It finds it's way to the contact parts, runs remarkably clean and significantly reduces chain and sprocket wear when compared to lubricants with low film strength. Synerlec® is the chemical component unique to Royal Purple and it's use actually improves the grade of metal surfaces prevalent in even the best bicycle components.

    Using Golden Degreaser is easy! All you need is a small brush to scrub your cassette, chain and rings. Put some Golden Degreaser on the parts, then on the brush and scrub. Within seconds, the old lube and dirt just dissolve. Rinse off with a fine spray of water to completely remove all traces of the degreaser and old deposits. In case there is no access to running water, you can completely wash a drivetrain with as little as a single quart of water in a sprayer bottle when using Golden Degreaser.

    1. Fill a bucket with water and soap
    2. Mount the bike on a workstand preferably, or lean it against a wall in a stable position
    3. Using a workstand is the most convenient and efficient method of holding the bike
    4. Remove electronic products such as a bike computer
    5. Support the chain with a chain holder to allow cleaning from all sides
    6. Apply Purple Extreme Degreaser to the rear cassette, allow to stand for two minutes only!
    7. Apply degreaser to chain and drivetrain
    8. With a brush, scrub rear cassette
    9. Scrub chain on all 4 sides, rotate crank to ensure a thorough clean
    10. Remove chain from front chainring, shift into inner chainring (smallest) and slide chain off
    11. Scrub front chainring, cranks, derailleurs and pedals thoroughly
    12. Remount chain onto front chainring and scrub pulleys
    13. Hose off bike using a fine shower, ensure all degreaser and old lubricant is removed
    14. Take a large bristle brush, dip into soapy water and clean entire bike
    15. Wash down bike with fine shower hose, removing all soap and leaving no residue
    16. Work chain with your hands to remove grit, lube and other contaminants
    17. Dry bike thoroughly using a soft cloth or compressed air
    18. It is at this stage that you might want to complete any mechanical repairs
    19. Apply wax at this stage if you so wish
    20. Remount rear wheel, inspect brakes and shifting
    21. Shift onto large chainring on front and small chain on the back
    22. While rotating cranks apply Purple Extreme lubricant to all chain links with an even pressure
    23. Spin cranks for a minute to ensure a good coating is applied
    24. Using a disposable towel wipe off any excess
    25. Leave to dry and solvent to evaporate overnight, then you are ready for a smooth ride
